This book is one of the most interesting biographies I have read in a long time. This book chronicles the early part of Geffen's life in such a way that you feel as if you could analyze his life. Obviously the young Geffen had a distant relationship with his father which would leave any child insecure. This insecurity coupled with the fact he grew up poor and felt marginalized in social circles - especially at school left me astonished as to how he mustered up the strength and courage to pursue his dreams of being a success in the entertainment industry. One constant and sustaining force in Geffen's life was his mother, who has since passed. Her business sense and her own strength that she exibited in her lifetime --her entire family was killed in WWII with the exeption of her sister, served as a model for the young Geffen. Her wisdom was reflected on in many chapters of the book and it is interesting to see how it played out in Geffen's life. Geffen's rapid rise through the music industrie's ranks is mesmorizing, given the fact that he almost failed high school. He demonstrated how one can be smart without exceeding in academics,or if you prefer Geffen's mother's theory that he had certain gifts and talents that would surface later on. This book details his meteoric rise in such a way that you view Geffen in a sympathetic light. You can't help but gain an understanding of what may have motivated this man to be so cutthroat when you reflect back on his struggles to excell and be popular as a child. David Geffen's need to excell left him with many admirers and enemies. Certain conflicts are interesting to watch as they play out, for example the very bitter and public feud with Mike Ovitz. I reccomend this book highly. Was this review helpful? Yes NoThank you for your feedback. Report this reviewThank you, this review has been flagged.
