    Wonderful

I have been a fan of Mr. Kay for sometime although I dont particulary care for a lot of fantasy books but river of stars is a mesmerizing read, well researched and rendered in a flawless almost poetic language. I am halfway through the book. Well done.

This book takes place in the same universe as "Under Heaven

This book takes place in the same universe as "Under Heaven," about 400 years later. It's not necessary to read the other book first, although this one has some references to episodes and characters.

Mr. Kay's usual masterful writing allows you to lose yourself in the story of duty, destiny, and intrigue. As usual, the characters are fascinating, complex, and completely realistic. The plot moves in unexpected directions, and I was on the edge of my seat more than once. Not my absolute favorite, but damn! Can that man write, or what?

Hey, B&N - when will the Nook version of the Fionavar Trilogy be available? Arbonne? Huh?

    Great Historical Fiction

If, like me, you are not terribly familiar with the Song Dynasty and this period in Chinese history, River of Stars provides a nice way to understand this pivotal moment in Chinese history. I read historical fiction like this to learn from someone who has done their homework and figured out how to put the time period into entertaining perspective.

Kay does exactly this by creating a world that is extremely complex but revolves around only 4-5 characters. Their trials, triumphs and failures are all bound by the actual historical circumstances of the collapse of the Song Dynasty.

I give the book only 4 stars because I found the writing to be a bit stolid and I tended to skip paragraphs/pages now and then because of some repetition, but the plot was clever, the characters very engaging, and the ending was true to the themes of the book. While I would have liked for the characters to have made different choices from my perch in the 21st Century, I fully understood where Kay was going and why, ultimately, the choices were made.

    Chilly

I love most of GGk's work but i found his last two novels chilly and unapproachable. The story is there but he doesnt make you really care about the characters and what happens to them.
Not like the end of Tigana or Lions of Al Rassan where i would be in tears even reading it a second or third time when i knew exactly what would happen.
