ROADWORK is a brilliant psychological portrait of a man decending into madness as he loses, bit by bit, everything that held his life together and gave it meaning. ROADWORK may not have any of the supernatural pyrotechnics found in Mr. King's more famous and popular work, but it is a penetrating portrait of a man stuggling to cope with unbearable loss. I did find it to be both suspenseful and compelling despite not being a traditional "horror" novel. The events that unfold are horrific, and the end is as dark as anything Mr. King has written. I enjoyed ROADWORK the most among the early "Bachman books," although they are all excellent and well-worth reading (The Long Walk, The Running Man, and Rage).

Probably not the best bachman book to start out with...

This is the first of the so called "Bachman Books" I've read and it was very good but not as good as i'd hoped. let me first start off that the characters have much more depth than the usual stephen king book (which is a lot considering how much character depth stephen king puts in his books). I give the characters a 5 definently. the problem with the book is that it can simply get boring and become a chore to read in some spots. it starts out well and then it fizzles out in the middle and picks up again right when he meets olivia. so basically the middle is just a man in a laundry company angry at the highway department but he doesn't do anything about it until the end of the book. that's another thing about the book. the ending took so long to build up to and it seemed to go way to quickly and left me a little angry there wasn't more carnage. It is like stephen king was taking his good sweet time with the middle writing more boring mundane details and at he end he was rushing to get it done and leaving out some of the stuff we love so much about stephen king. now that may seem like a lot of negative but here comes the positive. the characters are splendid as I said, when there is action it's very fast paced, you get a sense like this could actually happen because it's so realistic, you start to feel sorry for Bart because he's been dealt all the wrong cards. that's the mark of a good book if you feel sorry for the characters. I was almost in tears when he was talking about his son charlie dying of a brain tumor. those few pages in the book really did it for me. So even though this isn't definently his best I'm still not put off trying more bachman books.

    A great Bachman book!

Although I don't find this book to be the most enjoyable of the bachman books, I certainly do recomend it. It doesn't seem to be as morbid as some of the works from Stephen King's pseudomym, but an interesting novel nonetheless.

    Very Impressive writing!

Excellent book, King writes quick and to the point when it comes to major conflicts in the reading. There are many to enjoy. Definitely a recommendable book.

    Great Read!!

Although this book starts kinda slow once you get going it is impossible to put down. It is one of King's best books.
