We LOVE this book!!
We purchased this book through a Scholastic book order a couple of years ago, and love it so much, that we have given the book to several others as gifts. The illustrations are adorable, and the rhyming of the story is perfect. I do the voices for my kids, and they think it's a hoot. I even read this to both their classes at the school Halloween parties last year, and it was a big hit. I have a lot of favorite children's books, but this is at the top of my list...

strongly and highly recommended for five year olds
Wonderful imagery, clever repetitions cloaked in new, but familiar situations. Rhymes flow effortlessly. The book builds to an exciting climax, replete with humorous overtones.

My granddaughter loves it, asks for it repeatedly, and has memorized much of it. Although it is about a witch, it is not a Halloween book. The story is timeless.
Other pluses. "Room on the Broom" subtly demonstrates good behavior. In addition, I relate positively with the value system which undergirds the story. -

Such a sweet story emphasizing the importance of friendship and sharing
My 2-year-old daughter and I read this story all of the time. Grandma sent it us and we're so grateful! What a darling story illustrating the importance of acceptance, friendship, and sharing. I've created fun voices for each of the characters which my daughter just eats up. This story is a keeper that we'll read all year round, for several years to come.

Highly Recommended
As Halloween approaches, my first graders choose every single Halloween book from the bookshelf in our classroom. It's not even Halloween yet, and we have read all of our Halloween books! I decided I needed to go find some more! I chose this book and they responded so well to it! They kept saying "I'm so into this book!" It was pretty funny. This is a book that they want to read over and over again too. We love it!

Great rhyming FUN and fantastic illustrations!!!
My children ages 3, 3 and 6 all LOVE this book! They ask me to read it over and over. I just bought it for a friend for a birthday gift and have recommended it to several people! The rhyming and repetitive lines are great for beginning readers and fun for little ones to "read" along with too! I love that this book is not about Halloween at all so it is a great read all year long! I definitely plan to add more of Donaldson's book to our home library.

We also saw the play at the children's theatre and it was awesome! My kids age 6 and 4 loved the play and now love hearing the story over and over again.

Wonderfully written and beautifully illustrated. It's rhyme flows easily as the story goes along. Great book to read aloud. Perfect message for young and old...value of cooperation and gratitude for the help of others.

A story to tickle every child's fantasy
I was lent this book by an acquaintance and, having already read the Gruffalo and enjoyed that, I was looking forward to reading this one as well. I was not disappointed. In fact, the story appealed to me even more, if that's possible, than the Gruffalo. I liked the idea of a friendly witch who meets new friends on her journey to recover her hat, bow and wand and how, by working together, these friends overcome a greedy, red dragon. Personally, I think there is far too much emphasis in today's society on competition and having to be 'better' than others in order to be 'successful', and so any story that teaches children the value of cooperation is welcome. The story, whilst simple, has suspense and is wonderfully imaginative: the so-called 'monster', for example, is just a marvellous creation and brilliantly illustrated. And what child - or adult for that matter - can resist a bit of magic? It all results in a superb ending that had me smiling from ear to ear. As with the Gruffalo, the rhyming, repetitive verse makes the story very 'child friendly' and the wonderful rhythm captivates you from the word go and 'whooshes' you through the story (being a poet, myself, that is something I really do appreciate). As a child I would have loved to read this book and as an adult I loved reading it, because I've never grown out of that love of fantasy that makes a child's eyes shine (it's what inspires me today to write my own children's stories). I think this story is one that will tickle every child's fantasy. Highly recommended.

An every night read that doesn't get old!
My son LOVES this book and so do I. It's a great book for parents and children. After reading this book repeatedly I have all the voices down pat and the rhyming makes it fun for us both. Beautiful illustrations and clever story/text! It's my favorite children's book and we have a huge collection!

Clever, clever!
It takes a few readings of this book to fully realize its brilliance. There are many layers to the rhymes, wonderful alliteration, a fabulous tag line, and lots of different voices to have fun with. Such a great read-aloud book. Fundamentally, it is a story about being kind to others, and how that kindness is returned. Basically, an extremely clever and fun presentation of a simple moral code.

Awesome - A must read for children
Our two small children love this book. My 4 year old makes us read this book to him every night before going to bed. We have bought all of Julia Donaldson's books. We hope to hand down these books to our children's children. We also give them out as birthday presents.
