During the summer, I love to find books that grab and send you back to the innocent time of childhood. Even though this book is set in the present, it reminded me of the summer days and nights spent playing until late at night with that special friend. This book has all these elements, plus a dying artist who brings depth to two 10 year olds.

A Walk Back in Time

Rope Walk is a wonder of prose and insight, but I couldn't help but be bothered by the fact that children like Alice just don't exist anymore. I kept thinking that the story should have been set in the 30's or 40's, but then, there wouldn't have been a character with AIDS. I found the family idyllic and enviable (despite the loss of their mother), but unbelievable. Doesn't Alice go to school? Watch TV? Like the Smurfs? I also found Alice's voice and insight too mature for her age, especially at the beginning. However, in the moments when I was able to suspend my disbelief and just enjoy the story, it was beautiful. Like a walk back in time.

A Terrific Tale of Friendship and Love

This novel tells a beautiful story of the friendship, love and compassion that only children can create and share. The characters are compelling, honest and charming and the writing is descriptive and moving.
