Link Wray's Rumble
My purchase of this CD was simply due to hearing Jimmy Page refer to Wray in an interview. After listening to the CD, it's clear why Page, Beck, Townsend and others have referred to Wray as one of their earliest influences. Was this review helpful? Yes NoThank you for your feedback. Listen to the descending riff in the beginning of the title track and Zeppelin's "Dazed and Confused" immediately comes to mind. Wray's signature distorted guitar sound is especially evident on "Big City After Dark" and "Climbing a High Wall". Wray's rockabilly influence is evident on every track but particularly on "Black Widow" and "Switchblade" which conjur that menacing swagger this music evokes.
Wray's voice takes some getting used to but after a few listens you realize that it's perfect fit to his music.
All in all this is a good listen, if for nothing more than to hear what some of the greatest guitarists were listening to before they were great.
