    I Also Recommend:

A Clearer Picture of the War Between the States

This diary gives a picture of what the South truly suffered as a result of the invasion of the Yankees. There is much written to give another viewpoint than the onesided story put into the history books. This is a good place to begin to look at the whole picture and, if a person cares to find the whole truth, it will give an entirely different perspective to the butchery of the War between the States by the Union Army.

I purchased this book because of the reviews and I was not disappointed. This diary really puts a personal spin on the war. I was suprised to read that Sarah had many of the thoughts and feelings that I would today--especially in recent months.

    History at its best!

This is one of the best books that I have ever read. A friend of my father's that has since passed away gave me this book to read and since reading it, I have been a sucker for southern autobiographies, history and diaries. This is the absolute best way to learn about history- first hand! I really fell for Sara and her journey and felt completely included within her inner circle. What a gift for writing. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did. I couldn't put it down.

I did my Senior Project for my BA degree on Sarah's diary. It is perhaps the most influential book I have read. Sarah is a woman of great character and admirable values. Her attitudes towards the hardships of the Civil War, as well as towards personal tragedy are absolutely amazing.

    Into heart and mind

Sarah Morgan opened her heart and mind in her diary entries. Her funny personal quirks and almost destructive shyness lay upon the page for all to see. Through this diary, the reader is drawn into the life of a young Louisiana woman during the War for Southern Independence, through the heartbreak of loss of loved ones, home and almost everything else. Like reading Mary Chestnut, I felt as if I knew Sarah Morgan by the time I finished her book.
