I am a sixth grade student in Glendale, AZ

The book Say Goodbye by Laurie Halse Anderson is about Yum-Yum, an adorable therapy dog with the smallest body. He comes in once a month for a check up, and he is Zoe's favorite client. When Zoe sees how happy Yum-Yum makes the children at the Cancer Ward, it makes her proud. Gran (Zoe's Grandma) gives Yum-Yum a check up the same day. Only to find out, Yum-Yum has a tumor. It then becomes hard for Zoe, the Vet Volunteers, and the Cancer Ward children to "Say Good-bye" to their favorite pup, Yum-Yum.
Zoe is the main character in this story, as she is one of the Vet Volunteers and plays a major role in this story. When her mother leaves for an acting job, she is forced to stay with her Grandmother. She loves animals, so she decided to volunteer her time at her grandmother's Animal Clinic. She becomes attached to Yum- Yum, a regular client.
Gran is the 2nd main character in the book. She is Zoe's Grandmother and owner of the Animal clinic. Zoe stays with her while her mom is acting.
Yum-Yum is the 3rd main character. She is an A-D-O-R-A-B-L-E shih tzu puppy with the sweetest and smallest heart. Zoe says that she has Doggie Magic for making children so happy.
I did a little research and found that this book mainly takes place in Berkley, California. It is most likely in present day times, since they have cars and advanced technology.
I think the underlying meaning of this book is that you should never any regrets and that once someone is gone you should always keep them in your heart. Just like Zoe will never forget Yum-Yum.
I loved this story because it was special and every time I put the book down I wanted so bad to open it back up. It was touching and heartwarming and I think most children can relate to this book.
I can connect to this book in many ways. (1). I had a dog when I was smaller and she broke her ankle and died 2 days later. It relates because I also lost a dog I loved soo much.
I also remember reading this story in a magazine about a famous actor (Jessica Simpson) who had lost her dog. A few days later she found him! But unfortunately she had been eaten by a wolf. Jessica had also stated she would never forget her.
A related book is Dachshund in Danger by Ben M. Baglio. It is about losing a dog you love but them always staying with you-in your heart.

    WOW

I am a dog lover! I thought that was a heart warming though sad story. I never wanted to put the book down cuz it got me hooked. Was yum yum going to die or not? I woud reccomend it to anyone cuz i don't think there's a person out there that wouldn't like to read this story. It made me want to cry when Yum Yum was put to sleep:' Now I'm hoping to buy the rest of the series
