Delicious Eighteenth-Century Romp
Anyone expecting the standard bodice-ripper that can be read in an afternoon may be disappointed here. Sophie Gee has written a literate and delightful fictionalized version of an early 1700s London social scandal - which inspired Alexander Pope's classic satire "The Rape of the Lock". She perfectly renders the settings, fashions, and often-malevolent tone of English society at the time. It took me a couple of chapters to get used to the flowery dialogue of the upper-crust characters, but once into the rhythm of it, I appreciated anew the intricacy and power of the English language, especially when evoking wit or delivering the stinging insult. Ms. Gee gets extra points for adding a brief follow-up history of the real-life characters from the book. Highly recommended!

I like to read books about this time period (and later) in England from time to time, and I did enjoy reading this book. It was well written and fun to read.

An insight into the time
It is historical fiction based no the poet Alexander Pope. It tells of the inter circle of the upper class that marriages are based on inheritance, and that you don't know if someone is a killer or a gentleman behind the clothes or family name.

Absolutely one of the best reads of the season!
I read alot. This is truly one of the best books I have read in a long time that sticks so close to the actual history yet pulls the reader in so much that putting this book down is almost impossible. Writing style is excellent! Ninety nine percent of the time I give the books I have read away wanting to move on the next book but this one is a keeper!
