    I Also Recommend:

A non-Southern reader might grasp a better understanding of the differeces in culture, Everyone can benefit from the struggle of a dirt poor young man trying hard to fit in and learn the ways of city folk.

Rhodes first book "Moving Experiences" is not required reading to follow this second book; but it does give the reader a better background for the experiences and lessons learned. His poetry is between chapters and is in my opinion far superior to his prose. There is humor, as there is in everyones life, one gets the impression that the author does not exagerate as he is willing to embarass himself with his inexperience. The reader should be warned the author tells of a crude practical joke played on a fellow co-worker when he spent a summer in Illinois. While it is a very brief mention, it is not for the young reader. Along with his experiences with Northerners Mr. Rhodes also touches upon the race situation in the 1960's and his relationships. Readers from the South will no doubt enjoy reading of experiences similiar to their own, Northerners can become enlightened into the differences, many that still prvail. The writing is much improved from the authors first book and I am looking forward to following his life in his next book "Hillbilly in China".
