A great introduction to the fiction to come.
I thoroughly enjoyed this collection of diverse and engaging stories. Unlike the previous reviewer, I did not find them pat or 'trendy.' Their diversity (only 7 of the 19 stories are written in the first person) lies in the many unique voices that speak throughout the book. The stories are told through the eyes of both children and parents, in the context of American history as well as foreign cultures, and as both introspective narratives and more experimental fiction. I agree with Alexie, as a sneak preview into the next generation of writers, '[t]his is indeed a promising beginning to a new century.'
