A Major Book of the 20th Century
In fact, Simone de Beauvoir's examination of the situation of women, in Europe and wherever Europeans have settled, makes this, in my opinion, one of the funamental books of Western civilization ... and one of the most subversive. This English translation is the first to be complete and unabridged, with significant corrections of the earlier English translation.

Difficult To Classify
The text is a masterpiece and has changed how we think of women and womanhood. The translation, however, is deplorable. There are omissions which alter Beauvoir's meaning, and key philosophical terms are mistranslated, giving the impression that some sections mean the opposite of what they say in the original French. Knopf needs to either release a new translation, or allow someone else to do so, so we don't have to wait for this very important, but sorely misunderstood work to go into public domain.

A Masterpiece
This is a must read piece of literature. De Beauvoir's agruments are well written and show a lot of insight.
