The Best Book On Trauma That I Have Ever Read

This book, "Secret Survivors" is the most helpful book that I have ever read, and I continually use it for reference when we're going through specific issues. I struggle with Complex PTSD and DID, and have read many books regarding both diagnoses. E. Sue Blume's book is outstanding among all. Even though "Secret Survivors" was not written specifically to address Dissociative Disorders, I still find it incredibly helpful. We have to adapt some parts of the book to fit our different parts, but it is still the most comprehensive and useful information that I have ever found, and that includes DID specific books. "Secret Survivors" is still extremely relevant even now in 2009.

    E. Sue Blume wrote my story ~

When I read Secret Survivors, I was amazed at how accurate she was in describing a survivor. Not only did she describe survivors, she broke it down into different types of abuse, different types of perpetrators, and different kinds of coping skills. I felt like she was a fly on the wall in my own home. I couldn't describe my abuse any better than she did. The book made me feel less alone in my healing. I felt like others had made it through this horror and they lived. My therapist and I worked through this book together. It was very healing for me. Thanks E. Sue Blume!!!

    Finally, understanding myself

I have been in therepy since 1999 and nothing has moved me as much as this book. It really explains every aspect of the aftereffects in laymen terms. It hits on anxiety, trust, and much, much more. This will be my 'go to' book when I'm down and need reassurance. Also, this book will help your spouse/partner understand why you do things that you do.

The best book on incest and women available

This book is amazing. I came to it after reading quite a bit of literature on this subject, and it was the best, hands-down: informative, reassuring, hopeful, professional, and at the same time easy to read. As another reviewer said, it is like reading about your own life...any survivor will relate to it, learn from it, and thus find hope.

A must read for all incest survivors and spouses

This was the first book I picked up on incest survival and I couldn't have picked a better one. I have dog eared and highlighted more than half of this book. I felt as if I were reading a book about ME. I *finally* had words put to the feelings I have been experiencing all my life. But it did more than that, it gave me hope and strength. It also is a wonderful guide for what to do next. This book touched me to my soul, as it will you.

    Incredibly Informative!

I just completed this book and my therapist is now reading it. This is the first book I've ever read that describes how the incest has affected ALL aspects of our lives. It prooves my point that authorities would rather deal with effects rather than causes, ie. Alcoholism, Drug abuse. They also only address the mental/emotional disorders with medications but not what caused these disorders. So we have MEDICATED incest survivors still using 'coping mechanicisms' and not 'feeling.' And it perpetuates blame onto the survivor once again ' It's what's wrong with me.' Nothing gets resolved, just covered up. Again the prepetrator wins because we don't heal. I LOVE THIS BOOK! All survivors MUST read this book. The most freeing experience to know I'm not crazy after all!

The only book you'll need on this subject

Blume uncovers the truth about the trauma of incest. The after-effects of incest can last a life-time. I found this book at the library, and was determined to buy it from the book store.

    eye opening

The checklist at the beginning of the book was an insight into my world of secrets and it helped me to understand that it wasn't my fault. It has been on my book shelf for 8 years.
