A great learning tool
This book will not be a waste. If you're a true beginner like all of us were at some point or another, view Ms. Park's method as a means to an end. The grid system is extremely useful for the learning process, but you need to open this book with the mindframe that the grid is a means to an end. If you don't go into it with this mindset, you'll learn really quick like I did that if the grid system is all you use, it turns into a crutch and a stumbling block to creativity. (Of course, I didn't have the luxury of this info. No one had reviewed the book and the author says nothing about trying a portrait without the grid). I'd say that after about 4 or 5 portraits, try one without it. Drawing faces won't be nearly as daunting a task after this book and will be very pleasurable. You'll be able to throw that crutch away after a while. Enjoy!
