    The Truth is More Cinematic than the Movie

    For those of you who only know Thomas Edward Lawrence from David Lean's academy award winning film the Truth is more Cinematic than the Movie. This is the complete 1922 text of T.E. Lawrence's description of his two years with the Arab cause against the Turk's during World War One and the book is a compelling 841 page narrative not to be missed.

    There is a condenced version that I presume takes away alot of the descriptions of the day to day life and other non-campaign related material entitled The Revolt in the Desert. Personally, to understand Lawrence the complete second manuscript must be read. I said second, because his original completed work was stolen by a thief who thought his briefcase might contain valuables and Lawrence had to rewrite the entire work a second time.

    Just to give you an example of the difference between truth and fiction. In David Lean's film two young Arab boys become his servent. There is a great scene in the film showing Lawrence and the boys crossing the desert to tell the British the Arab revolt has taken Akaba. In the film the desert sands open up and one of the two boys dies as it drags him under while Lawrence fight to save him. It didn't happen. However, the boys existed and were Lawrence's servants, but they never accompanied him on this journey and one of the two did die. Only Lawrence was not there and did not learn of it until months later by the surviving boy. Interesting after many comments on these two throughout the book. T.E. Lawrence never mentions how he died, nor where.

    In short this is a great first hand narravtive and a must read.

    Looks terrible on Nook

    The eBook was done in an HTML format. The pages run off the screen. There's an inactive "Table of Contents" button at the end of every chapter. I'd try and find a better copy if it was free, but paying for it makes it worse.

    Interested in the Middle East?

    Check it out. Lots of what is happening in that part of the world today started here and with the man. Learn your history from the sources. He wrote the book not for the general public only for a select few.

    Let the buyer beware

    Text is missing at the end of EVERY line, rendering this edition completely unreadable. If, like me, you're looking for an affordable version of the complete 1922 text of "Seven Pillars of Wisdom," all I can say is keep looking.
