    Wow!

This was some weird stuff but in a good way. I love her creatures and animals. It¿s so creative. And have you ever seen any kind of story set in Niger? In the future? The plot moves fast but it also deals with some really heavy issues. This novel will stay with me for a long time.

An Outstanding Addition To The Young Adult Fantasy Canon

This is the book I wish I had read when I was 14 alongside Tamora Pierce's Alanna series. 15-year-old Ejii's struggles and triumphs come at that perfect balance of taut, apocalyptic thrill and the wonder of magic and discovery of self esteem and power. Nothing is simple in this story, set in the coming decades after magic has come to the Earth following nuclear war. Humanity is struggling to resettle itself, to incorporate the new 'metahumans' with special abilities, including the windseekers of the author's previous novel, the shadow speakers, and more. Ejii ultimately embarks on a quest not only to master her own budding magics and gain self-esteem, but also to be a voice for the youth who are the product of a newly blended society. Her quest leads her to another world and a summit of leaders from a range of realities poised at the brink of war. Ejii must learn to trust her abilities not only to speak with shadows, but to speak for peace. This novel is a welcome addition to a woefully thin category of good literature for youth that addresses the strengths of girls and of non-Western cultures. Its thoughtful treatment of a girl coming into her own reminds me of the best parts of Tamora Pierce's Alanna novels. I recommend it to anyone who enjoys thought-provoking fantasy.
