Until recently, the vast majority of Americans, including even many who were generally well-informed about public affairs, paid little attention to government unions, how pervasive they are, and how they operate. That began to change in early 2011, when the national media decided to give intense coverage to the Wisconsin protests orchestrated by Big Labor in response to Badger State Gov. Scott Walker's move at that time to roll back union monopoly bargaining in the public sector.

Nowadays Americans who follow the news are far more likely than they were in the past to know that the percentage of state and local government employees who are unionized is far greater than in the private sector (specifically, 5.5 times as great). But too little attention is still being paid to the root of the problem: state statutes and executive orders that grant union officials forced-union-dues and "exclusive bargaining" privileges over public servants like teachers, police officers and firefighters. That's one reason why Shadowbosses is such a valuable contribution to the ongoing public discussion over how to keep taxpayer costs for government employee compensation from spiraling out of control and improve the quality of schools and other government institutions.

Shadowbosses puts the focus exactly where it should be. As the book explains, for private-sector and government union bosses alike, the "highest priority" in negotiating contracts is a so-called "union security" provision "that allows the union to collect dues and fees" from every front-line worker in a business, "union member or not." Author Mallory Factor emphasizes: "This is the gold mine that fuels the government union movement."

What's really undermining the economy is the financial sector and the
intelligence agencies behind it. Worker's unions have long fought for
basic rights and were denied and even unions themselves have been

The Book the Unions will hate!

Mallory Factor gives you the inside story of how Unions have been ripping off the American People. This is an important book to read before the election and I encourage all to do just that.

Shadowbosses is an extremely well-crafted, painstakingly researched
expose about one of the major forces shaping today’s political process:
Government Employee Unions. If you have ever wondered just how labor
unions work and what impact they have on government employees,
politicians and the everyday taxpayer, you must pick up this book.
Packed with eye-opening facts, thoughtful insights, drama and unmasking,
Mallory Factor has delivered a page-turner that directly effects every
citizen’s life. As an independent, I found Shadowbosses to be relevant,
fascinating and particularly timely as we seek to lift the veil and
further understand the forces that are really at work behind the scenes.
This one is worth your while!

Thank God for the Book Channel. You can learn what a writer is about without spending a nickel. This fellow presented his thoughts Labor Day weekend. Somewhat ironic, considering his anti-labor posture. So I have not and will not read this book, but do feel that "PaulRyan" and the other one-star Anonymous nail it.

Don't delay! Important book in perilous times!

I haven't paid nearly enough attention to the modern state of unions and their impact American families. Shadowbosses takes a close and meticulous look at the history of unions to their present day impact. And worse......where this path will take us if we don't wake up and fight back. While most of us have focused on survival for our small businesses and our families ( without benefit of " back door deals" ) in these difficult economic times, Mallory and Elizabeth Factor have tirelessly researched the impact of modern unions and presented us with a concise, sometimes humorous and frightening look at the past and a look into our future. When the President is telling Americans " that we didn't make that" and engaging in secret quid pro quo deals with Unions........we need to take the time to be up to date. The Factor book Shadowbosses gives you a well informed, precisely referenced and well written book to do just that! Read it and get involved.

Fantastic book on what's ailing America

A fun read for anyone remotely interested in politics. Mallory and Elizabeth Factor take us inside the union machine to reveal the bosses who push the levers with dexterity and a great deal of humor. It is a revealing take on how union bosses are destroying our education system and blowing a massive hole in government coffers. Anyone who buys the book won't be disappointed.

I had no idea that Government unions were so detrimental to our government! I am from South Carolina (a right to work state) and had no idea tax payers were paying for government workers for the time they work for unions... and not their government jobs!!! How our president has allowed more union access to the White House and more kickbacks in history! The most shocking to me was how the book had so many sources backing up these truths. I highly encourage everyone to read this book! Read it even if your a liberal, conservative, or anywhere in between... the truths in this book effects us all Americans!

Mallory Factor's book is a serious and comprehensive indictment

Mallory Factor's book is a serious and comprehensive indictment of the shady practices of public sector unions. It reveals how these unions, through immense political power, are able to elect essentially whomever they like, then negotiate for enormous benefits and salaries for the people the union represents--all while the union bosses collect six digit annual salaries. These unions are bankrupting our cities and states. Factor provides ample evidence to this end, but most telling is his analysis of which states are fiscally on a good track and which aren't. Not too shockingly, the ones in the worst shape are also the ones with the biggest public sector union presence. The goals of these unions are to make government bigger, not better. Factor's book makes an important contribution to the ongoing campaign to rescue America's taxpayers from the grips of unions who serve only themselves.

Shadowbosses is a must-read for anyone who dares to understand who has a big hand in running the United States of America through elected politicians, and how they are going about it.

As a former (nine years) Editor for Bobbs-Merrill Publishing (New York / Indianapolis) and current writer of columns for two national automotive magazines, I was impressed with the research that obviously went into this book. Rather than ranting with no legitimate documentation, Mr. Factor calmly pursues presenting information that will be difficult to comprehend by those whose eyes are still glazed over by a hope-and-change mentality.

On the other hand, those with an inkling of the problem of public-sector unionism controlling politicians may be surprised at the depth and width of the problem, and the dramatic action that will be needed to counteract it if the country is to survive the demands of unions representing non-producers... "pie eaters," per Mr. Factor (as opposed to pie makers).

Greatly appreciated was Mr. Factor calling out Indiana as the first new Right-to-Work state in ten years. Ours was a hard-fought battle but, thankfully, we were spared much of the destruction and ugliness that faced Wisconsin when Gov. Walker reigned in the demands of those who would bankrupt The Badger State.

Overall, an easy, excellent, factual book to read. Highly recommended; an honest presentation.

Despite the typical pan by Kirkus, is it not most telling that the first person invited to the White house after Obama's win was Richard Trumka What will happen when there are more government workers than taxpayers. It is a fact of biology that the parasite eventually kills the host.. In the private sector the unions have forced many companies out of business. There is no govenrment parallel; just an unending supply(or so they think) of taxpayer money
Anyone with an ounce of financial common sense, need only look to states like, CA, IL,NY and others who are being bankrupted or taxed to death under democratic/public sector union finances. They are the true wealthy class, not those of us working to support them until they die. It is the class that Obama and
public worker unions are expanding when they refuse to cut spending. SPENDING = MORE GOVERNMENT WORKER UNION MEMBERS. America needs to wake up before it's too late!

    Very enlightening!

Detailed account of how the public sector unions are destroying the future of America for our children and grandchildren. This book will open the readers mind to how the unions hold the American people hostage with their draconian demands that will ultimately destroy our monetary system.
