SHADOWS AND STRONGHOLDS by Elizabeth Chadwick is an exciting Med

SHADOWS AND STRONGHOLDS by Elizabeth Chadwick is an exciting Medieval historical fiction set in 1148 England. I have yet to pick up an Elizabeth Chadwick novel I did not enjoy and this one was no exception. When you have read one of her stories you have visited a different era and time. She makes you feel as though you are there with her characters experiencing their heartbreak, sorrows, struggles, triumphs, and love. In "Shadows and Strongholds" we follow Brunin Fitzawarin who feels he does not fit anywhere, but he is a Knight in training to the Lord of Ludlow,Joscelin. Here he finds Joscelin's daughter,Hawise, befriends her and may just find his place and a love to savor. England's in turmoil,as well as Brunin. A wonderful, epic tale of coming of age during a turbulent time, finding your place, and maybe losing your heart. Chivalry is still alive even in turbulent times. Anyone who enjoys history,Early England, hearing more of the fight between Prince Henry and King Stephen, and a great read will truly enjoy "Shadows and Strongholds". Ms. Chadwick as done an excellent job with her engaging characters, intriguing plot and chivalry. Received for an honest review from the publisher.

reads more like a fine medieval biographical fiction

In 1148 England, Lord FitzWarin decides that his ten year old son will be a nothing wastrel unless he takes drastic actions. He informs the reticent gloomy Brunin that he needs some hardening so he arranges for him to serve as a squire to his friend and ally, Joscelin de Dinan. --- Years later the now adult but still intimidating Brunin has gained plenty from the caring but strict mentoring of de Dinan and the fun and games he used to play with his host¿s daughter, Hawise. However, recently she has behaved differently towards him, outrageously at times and subtly at other moments flirting with Brunin. Meanwhile Henry II becomes king and calls in his nobles such as FitzWarin and de Dinan to assist him in an upcoming battle to keep his throne. Brunin fights for his monarch, weds Hawise, but loses his family land to the invading Welsh while enemies Gilbert de Lacy and Ernalt de Lysle plan to steal Jocelin¿s estates. --- In some ways SHADOWS AND STRONGHOLDS reads more like a medieval biographical fiction as the tale follows the life of Brunin in three parts, as a ten year old as a teen and finally as an adult. The story line contains suspense in each section, but the intrigue seems secondary when Brunin is a preadolescent and a teen the plot takes off when the adult Brunin tries to recover all he lost starting with Hawise. Though historical romance fans may find the first two sections slow, readers will appreciate this fine tale as they opening acts lead to a strong climax. --- Harriet Klausner

    Captivating

This novel is a convincing and captivating historical fiction set in 12th century England. The tale follows the life of Brunin FitzWarin and is written creatively to pique the readers' attention and immerse them in a suspenseful medieval epic.

It opens with Lord FitzWarin taking drastic action and sending his 10 year old son Brunin to serve as a squire to his trusted friend and ally Joscelin de Dinan. Lord FitzWarin knows his son is at a turning point and needs to overcome the shyness that is holding him back. Joscelin de Dinan is the right person to groom him and teach him the fine art of knighthood.

The mentoring turns Brunin into a strong young adult and his close relationship with Hawise, Joscelin de Dinan's daughter, changes from childhood play to trust and admiration and eventually romance...Oh! those pesky medieval hormones...... Brunin weds her before joining his father and father-in-law on an upcoming battle with King Stephen in a quest to keep Henry of Anjou on the throne.....

While away at war, the two families suffer, a Welsh invasion seizes the FitzWarin estate and de Dinan's rival asserts his claim on Ludlow.

The fast-paced plots are captivating and the writing delves deep into the emotions of its characters. It provides an interesting look into medieval feuds and the deadly rivalry between those in power and those seeking power. A veritable page turner chronicling adventures, courage and love.

"Shadows and Strongholds" is a romantic story, loosely based on facts and events told by troubadours of the time.

I find this time period very interesting and I am strongly entertained by Ms Chadwick's take on it
