    Wonderful!

This is one of the best, most memorable books I've read. A great historical novel of Old Quebec and Canada. Highly recommend for those who know Quebec City, Lower and Upper Canada as well as those who would like to learn about early Canada.

    Quebec History

This is a must read for those who are fans of Quebec city and who enjoy historic novels. I've read many of Cather's works and this is one of my favorites.

    Shadows on the Rock Review

I was assigned this book just about 3 weeks ago in my Women Writers class in college. This book was okay, but often hard to understand due to Cather's writing style. She avoids dependence upon the plot, structuring her novels with loosely connected, tight, independent scenes. There are many French phrases and French-influenced names of characters which might confuse the reader (as it did for me) because so many names sound alike! Before this assignment, I did not know of or had ever heard of Willa Cather as an author. From what I understand now, she is one of America's finest women writers!
