    more from this reviewer

    I Also Recommend:

    Richard Adams is great.

Shardik is a great novel. After reading Watership Down I figured Richard Adams must have a bunch of other great books. He does. Shardik is a very moving book. It takes a lot of energy to read though. I am an avid reader and even I had a couple trouble spots in this book. IT's worth it in the end. This is more grown-up than Watership Down or Plague Dogs. I would say 17+.

    Better than 'Watership Down'!

What a thrill to see this wonderful novel in print again! Adams goes far beyond what he achieved in 'Watership Down' to create a fully-realized epic fantasy. Intelligent, compassionate, well-written, richly textured and beautifully realized, 'Shardik' compares favorably with the best in this genre. Accessible to older teens, this is also a satisfying read for adults. Highly recommended.

This is actually a follow up to Adams' Maya. Fabulous book, wish it were on nook as the pb is roughly 5" thick (no exageration). If you love Shardik, fully immerse yourself in that world. I have read (and reread) Maya every year or so since 1990 and still find it a wonderful read.

The Best Book I Have Ever Read

The title is not an exaggeration. I have truly never witnessed a story so intriguing, interesting, exciting, sometimes sad and sometimes happy, romantic, powerful..I could go on and on. What you need to know is that you have not read truly awesome fiction until you have read Shardik (or any of Adam's books for that matter). No dragons and wizards here, just a fantasy that explores the relationship and interpratation of the human mind with what he believes to be sacred. Read this. You have to.
