This is the John Lennon 'best of' to get if you don't want to think of his tragic death
I got 'Shaved Fish' on LP (it was the last album released on Apple) sometime in the late '70s, before Lennon's comeback with 'Double Fantasy' (and of course, before 12/08/80, the Beatles fan equivalent of '9/11/01', if you will). True, 'Shaved Fish' is Lennon's hits up until 1975, so it doesn't have anything from 'Double Fantasy' or 'Milk and Honey' - but to its credit, it does have the only worthy track from 'Some Time in NYC' (that song with the 'n' word, which has been left off the subsequent 'best of's after Lennon's death), and because it's centered around his best from 1969 - 1975, there's not so much a feeling of loss the way I get when hearing anything from DF or M&H (great as songs "(Just Like) Starting Over", "Watching the Wheels" and "Nobody Told Me" are, it's very hard to separate them from his assasination, particularly having lived through it, and at times, it feeling like it was only yesterday...) Obviously, if you're the sort that doesn't make such a connection when hearing his music, do get 'Lennon Legend' and enjoy all the best of his solo career (and also to get the full version of "Give Peace a Chance" - neither version on 'Shaved Fish' is the whole 1969 single). Was this review helpful?
