    Disappointing

I don't understand the rave reviews. I found this book hard to get through and couldn't wait until it was over. Penelope raised a bunch of selfish whining children and was tired of reading about them and their selfish behavior. I thought the book skipped around too much and I was confused sometimes about what year it was etc. I have read much better.

    Penelope, a disappointing mother

I don't think I have ever read a book where I despised the central character more than I did Penelope. I realize most of the reviews have been raving, but I don't get it. Here we have a woman who marries a man she doesn't love, never grows to love him despite having 3 children by him, has an affair with someone else while the husband she doesn't love goes off to fight a war, and then hates two of her children because they remind her of her husband, while at the same time overindulges the one who reminds her of the lover, and whom she secretly wishes was his! Every time she and the other siblings have a tiff, Peneope does something to try and hurt them even more! I felt so sorry for the other siblings and could understand how the pain of a mother's withheld love could cause them to behave the way they did. I rejoiced when that old bag (Penelope) bit the dust. Aside from that, I liked the imagery and the writing, in general. That is why I gave it 2 stars rather than only 1. I wish I could have seen something good about Penelope, but I never did, right up to the end of her miserable life.
