A classic family saga but a few too many disfuntional plots

Clutteriing the flow and a curious unsatisfying ending did they make a movie? Written today would have included receipes. The best of her lot. This is a good woman 's book club read still and had a pretty cover. One or two steps above a cartand romance and longer than steele m.a.

    A Good Read

What a good book. I can totally relate to the main character. This book has everything.

    Disappointed

I read this book because it was on a library's list of the 'Greatest 100 Novels of the 20th Century.' I was disappointed with several aspects of the book. How many times do we need to speculate on why Danus doesn't drink or drive? NO ONE in the conservative 1940s has a problem with a married woman carrying on an affair, especially when her husband is a soldier? And how many times do we need to be reminded of the worth of the paintings and sketches? I gave this novel 3 stars because I think the plot was good and the book could have been much better if about 200-300 pages were edited out.
