I must preface this with--I have not yet read the book, but was intrigued by the title. Dr. Oz somewhat recently had a segment on the use of NSAID pain killers and their correlation to hearing loss--just thought I'd pass that on so you can look it up.

not very helpful
I have been hearing-impaired for most of my life, and deaf for the past couple of years. This book is too technical to be helpful to the average person. It might be more helpful to someone who is not yet deaf, or someone who was just diagnosed. I have been through countless medical and audiologist procedures. This book was not helpful to me, and was very disappointing. Save your money. I was I did.

If people would only face me and talk normally...
I, like the author am hard of hearing. I have also worked with the Deaf for more than 50 years. This book tells it like it is and if folks would only be more understanding (no, I don't use Braille) and (yes, I can hear some).

Interesting and useful
As a person with 'moderate' hearing loss I found this book to be both interesting and useful. Now i fully understand why i no longer enjoy parties as much as i used to. I see that i have been withdrawing from people outside of my immediate family. And I understand why it is important for me to wear my hearing aids everyday. (I used to wear them only while in business meetings where I absolutely had to hear everything that was said.)

Bouton nails it clean! Being hearing deficiet all my life and still achieve a high level career position, I appreciate her perspective and the many struggles along the way. This book is an excellent education for hearing people, especially bosses and co-workers, and reinforcement for those who suspect they are hearing impaired but don't want to acknowledge it, and hopefully will elevate understanding for everyone with regard to the impact of hearing loss. Many thanks to Katherine Bouton. Now lets get a reliable technical manual out so we can find the equipment we need to help us carry on.
