Fletcher¿s book ¿Simple Things¿ is a nice, gentle and comforting
Fletcher’s book “Simple Things” is a nice, gentle and comforting collection of Christian-inspired poetry that I have not seen around in a while. It was refreshing to read, because it displays the journeys we all encounter during faith. There are times when we are exuberant and confident about our faith and there are times when we feel so disheartened that we question our faith. Fletcher covers both of those issues brilliantly, not with a long sermon or prose about faith, but with poems that have a quiet, but simple elegance to them. The book focuses on “simple things” like family, dogs, love, and television, but does so in a way that those things are elevated to more importance because of Fletcher’s poems. This is also helped by Fletcher’s use of good rhyme (usually but not always end rhyme).

Some of my favorite poems (and I had quite a few) were “Can God?”, “Thank You Lord” , “The Lord’s Prayer”, “By the Grace of God”, “The World is in Need”, and “ I Want a Dog in Heaven”. “Can God?” expresses a mixture of man’s vulnerabilities, faith, and confidence in that faith. I also like that Fletcher was able to switch up his style and take things like the word GPS, or “Amazing Grace” and turn them into something creative and extremely insightful with only a few verses. Another of Fletcher’s poems, “ I want a Dog in Heaven” displays an incredible mixture of humor and insight in a way that really made me think. I appreciated the ability of author to do that.
In summary, this book offers a lot if you are on a faith journey and want to be inspired by one man’s journey through faith. Reading Fletcher’s book, you come to see that we all have the much of the same insecurities and vulnerabilities about faith. In choosing to share his story, you come to see that it is only in actively sharing and participating in our faith are we able to watch that faith grow to amazing things. As a budding poet myself, I am humbled by this poet’s ability to translate that experience and insight into verse. If my work meets a tenth of what he is able to do, then I will be pleased. -
