    highly recommend

This book has given me a whole new perspective on travel. Lurking amongst the tourist traps are fabulous things to discover. Not only is this book entertaining it is also surprisingly informative. It is a hybrid of travel guide, humor and scholarly text. Any one who enjoys David Sedaris and the like will surely love this.

    Great summer read

This is a great book for anyone considering a trip to Europe, or an armchair traveler interested in great stories. It's a hugely entertaining ride from London to Paris to Venice to Rome and Capri. Along the way, there are endless eye-popping discoveries -- about the Hellfire Clubs in Britain, the "sex chair" of King Edward VII in Paris, the Marquis de Sade's chateau in Provence, Casanova's secret sites in Venice... My favorite is about the Vatican. The author learns about a "pornographic bathroom" painted by Raphael in the heart of the Papal apartments and goes to seek it out...! It's a hilarious adventure, and I learned a great deal about the Vatican (and the Renaissance) along the way -- it's all very seductive, in every way!
