    Surprisingly Disappointing

First let me say I love Mo Hayder's writing style and creativity. Typically her stories grip me and pull me right into so I imagine I am right there with Jack going through everything with him and this book was no exception to that; however I found a lot of plot lines that were just dropped. I had assumed that it was due to this book being an intentional cliff hanger and that the next book out by her would complete the story. Not true. The book out this year, 'Gone' has NOTHING to do with 'SKIN' according to the synopsis I read so the SKIN story is just languishing with all these unanswered questions. One redeeming potential is that SKIN may be continued in a future novel (I hope).

Also, I am disappointed in the evolution of the antagonist in this book. There was very little character development for him and at the climax of the 'epic battle between protagonist and antagonist' was nothing more than essentially a sissy girl fight with some hair pulling and slapping. I've read all of the books except GONE and this book has really surprised me by its comparative lack of quality. It's just not typical of the author's work.

I really liked all the other books in this series but this one had a very weak ending. The book wasn't nearly as suspenseful as the others and I was somewhat disappointed in this particular one.

Someone has described Mo Hander as "easily today’s best writer of visceral and elemental horror." I would say that's an absolute UNDERSTATEMENT.

More deus ex machina than I'm used to

The characters are challenged, and made a little wobbly by their circumstances, but they're still solid.
