That said, it's a pity the rating has some low stars due to some electronic pre-order issues... the issues were certainly not the author's fault and thusly shouldn't earn 1-star ratings.
Regardless, I greatly enjoyed another romp in Harry Dresden's world.

I am still after all these years constantly amazed that someone who kills technology has such a good grasp on popular culture films.  If you like the series, you'll like this book.

    more from this reviewer

    Meh

NO SPOILERS, just my opinion. I have read all the books. Pre-ordered this one and eagerly awaited it's arrival. I can normally finish a novel in a few days. It took me forever to read this one...and I was on vacation, with lots of free time. If it had been a stand alone book, I doubt I would have finished it at all. There are too many good books to waste time on bad ones. This just did not grab a hold of me and draw me into the story until close to the end. I finished because I wanted to know the fate of the characters I have grown to love. I hope this was a "get us to the next place" kind of book and the next one will be more engaging. He opened up some interesting possibilities. If you are a Dresden fan, yes, you will likely want to read it...or read some of those reviews that explain all the plot points.

Good over all, but it didn't get me to react to it in the same way other titles in the series have.

I think I may have been spoiled by the previous three books in the series. They've all featured a climax worthy, in my mind, of a summer blockbuster. This one isn't trying to be that. This is a heist film. So while there is a few action sequences before the end, they feel very subdued against their nearest neighbors.

Actually, subdued feels like a good description of the book over all. Everything seemed a bit dialed back. The humor of the series wasn't as prevalent throughout this time. What few moments of awesome we got were either very brief, or undercut by a dark twist. And while I liked that my favorite character of the series got to come out of retirement for one final ride, I missed a different character who did make an appearance, but didn't quite seem like his old self.

Good over all, but it didn't get me to react to it in the same way other titles in the series have.
