Good characters and flow, but a few problems.

I enjoyed this series. I'm pretty love/hate with most novels, so I'm pleased to put this in the "love" category. The characters seemed likable. The author focused on fleshing out a small number of people, which I liked. Also, the stress of the series had a peak more in the middle than at the end, which made the experience of reading it much more relaxing and enjoyable. I looked forward to reading it each night. So why am I giving it 3 stars instead of 5? Well, there were a few things that bugged me. Certain lines in the books seemed very repetitive. I got the impression that the author tried to get into the "feel" of the book before each writing session, and ended up writing that feeling down again and again. This was noticeable in all three books, with some chapters simply sounding like edited versions of the previous. The author's feeling was well conveyed, but it seemed a little forced. The main characters didn't carry over from one book into the next well. The author really fleshed out some characters, giving their background and personality, then *poof*! Suddenly she barely mentioned them anymore. I could understand if she later realized that one character was boring to write and wanted to get rid of him, but it happened to most of them. Lastly, one thing that really bugged me was the main character's lack of any loyalty toward Earth. I understand that she had a miserable time there, but for being such a touchy-feely person, I just couldn't understand why she didn't think about it more often. Perhaps the author wanted to escape the world so strongly that she couldn't imagine wanting to come back to it? Hmmmm...

the first of a wonderful series

this is the writer that got me started on a trip to somewhere else. I enjoyed all 3 books. I always enjoy knowing from the start that I can easily recommend to teenagers and adults. Beautiful, interesting, well-written books can be so entertaining wo language that may be offensive to some and yep, it would be to me. This is work the effort and can be read within a few days if you have the time but never lets you forget there is more to read and so you pick it up again. love it

After reading the first volume in this trilogy, I immediately purchased this book and the concluding books and spent a weekend reading both to completion. The relationship between Tarke (the Shrike) and Rayne (the Golden Child) is fascinating and wll written. Sometimes the author is a bit wordy (a good professional editor would have helped) but the characterizations are such that a reader can easily become misty-eyed and anxious for the characters' well-being. For those who like epic fantasy, this is an excellent trilogy.
