Sleeping Arrangements
When the author's mother died, she memorialized her in this loving and hilarious and yet tragic memoir. The author went on to be raised by her mother's bachelor brothers and what I loved about this, is that it shows how and why a family succeeds, this one is eccentric, living in the bronx, and wacky to the world outside, but deliriously happy and successful within...A real boost! I laughed so hard you don't want to know what happened!

This writer grew up next to Yankee Stadium, was orphaned and raised by two bachelor uncles. Her story is so truthful, funny and sad. She grew up, listening to the baseball game: It's a homer! I liked it better than any other memoir. She reminds me of Dorothy Parker or Mary MaCarthy. Very brilliant but down to earth. I lay awake two nights in a row to finish. This book is a bestseller to be!

Women, men, boys, girls--everybody take note. the memoir of this girl who grew up an illegitimate orphan near Yankee Stadium is a first class story everyone can relate to...It has all the funny horrors of growing up...sexual coming of age, the off beat family...Beautiful, poetic writing. This is a sleeper, and a winner!Home run!

Sleeping Arrangements
My high school teacher assigned this book, and I thought it would be dull. I stayed up all night! It is outrageously funny, sexy, sad...the gamut. I lent it to my mother who said it was the best book she ever read --she was an orphan too, like the author and was raised by one uncle...the author was raised by two bachelor uncles. But I loved the coming of age stuff best...the make-out scenes and tongue kissing etc. It isn't often you find a childhood memoir that can please all ages. Grab this one!

Sleeping Arrangements
I started hearing a lot about this book from my friends, so I bought it and wow...This is one of the great ones, up there with Angela's Ashes and all the Mary MacCarthy books. This book tells it like it is regarding childhood, sex play acting, wild adventures and deep, enduring family love. the uncles are hilarious in their way of raising a girl. So much love, so much laughter. I have already had to read this twice and recommend it to everyone I know. Wow, again.

This is a child's story for grownups...Little Lily Shaine loses her mother at 8, enters a fantasy world, is raised by loving bachelor uncles and copes with a senile hilarious grandma. It may sound like Dickens but it reads more like Philip Roth or Isaac Singer...This is a writer to watch. I read a Place in The Country, her new book, and was blown away..had to find out more about her, and this succeeded beyond my dreams. I see what the fuss is about! She writes for The New Yorker sometimes but is definitely cool...

Sleeping Arrangements
I have heard about Sleeping Arrangements from so many people. This is one of the great ones, a girl's story akin to Frank McCourt's Angela's Ashes. It's a glorious testament to how an orphan can grow up next to Yankee Stadium, be raised by loving if kooky uncles and turn out to be one helluva writer. So funny, so sad, so sexy...I love her!

Sleeping Arrangements
I could not put down Sleeping Arrangements--This is the sleeper of all time. If you are interested in memoir, this is a female Angela's Ashes. Lily is orphaned, and taken care of my two bachelor uncles. It is hilarious when the two men try to take care of the little girl. But so loving! And the story is outrageously funny, too --Lily exposes childhood secrets --the wicked, pagan games. I could not stop laughing! I bought sevral copies for my best friends!

This is one of the best books ever. My teacher recommended it and I thought it would be just another growing up story but this is completely original. I forgot how funny and sexually outrageous childhood games can be...and the story of the uncles is a pure love story. My mother loved it too, and all her friends! A real winner

Sleeping Arrangements
I have read and re-read this book --I dream about this story of a little girl, orphaned and raised by her uncles. The scenes of childhood are very fresh...no one has written up the interior world of childhood like this--I love the little girls playacting at sex and romance --the family love story is hilarious and heartbreaking. I bought so many extra copies because all my friends wanted this book...now they've bought more for their friends...This is a cult classic! I can't wait for the movie, it will be the New York version of To Kill a Mockingbird. I laughed, I cried, I read it again...My students all loved it too..It is just right for 15+ --it is a bit sexy-- this author is fearless! Kids and grownups alike all fall in love with the story of Lily, who learns about sex and death, while still a child...And yet it is the funniest book I ever read!
