Snakes and Reptiles: The Scariest Cold-Blooded Creatures on Earth

Not for small kids or families with reptile pets!

While the book is entertaining to the adults (for all the wrong reasons!) it is in no way appropriate for my kids. The book is full of graphic depictions of snakes and other reptiles attacking people! For example, the American Alligator is shown eating a pet dog while still attached to a leash as the owner himself is getting pulled into the water! This one is going on the top shelf and will be shared with our adult herpetologist friends over cold beer and warm laughs. It won't be coming down for the kids to read for fear that they will have nightmares regarding their pet python.

The scariest book ever

an absolutely terrifying book. Absolutely unrealistic pictures portraying snake attacks that could never happen. Not approriate for kids by any means but hilarious for adults.

Highly Recommended

We got this book and the same one about Dinosaurs for our 3 1/2 year old. He begs to read these book. The artwork in these books is amazing! There are some graphic pictures however, he loves Crocodile Hunter and understands that sometimes animals do need to seems scary to protect themselves. We also like to go on walks so the snake book is a great way for him to learn what type of snake is good and bad. Amazing books and were going to look for more by Susan Barraclough.

Great book for any 9 year old interested in Snakes and Reptiles.

Snakes was a great buy for a hardback book. My son had been looked at this book at school and wanted his own copy. Seems to be very informative. He was more excited to see the book than some of his toys he received for Christmas!

Please don't buy this...

... unless you can somehow figure out how to turn it into a drinking game or something. Seriously, this book is Ridiculous: gratuitous carnage, partial-truths in information, and illustrations that look like reptile charicatures from a Littlest Pet Shop nightmare.

As a zoo educator, I found this book appalling to say the least, and implore you to consider a different purchase!

Awsomest snake book EVAR!

The title should be, "101 ways to die a gruesome death by oversized snakes in color" Olivia, Callie, Wadey and I really loved the attention to detail the illustrator showed in depicting how a snake can bite a person in the face, leaving blood dripping from the wound. Wadey really liked the depiction of the eyelash viper biting the farmer in the throat as he screams his death cry. Also the story of how turtles can drop out of trees and hurt people was a a good cautionary tale for would be canoeist. The picture of the bannana hunter lying dead in a pool of blood and venom was my favorite. THIS BOOK IS AN INSTANT BED TIME STORY CLASSIC!

HORRIBLE BOOK!

This book is terrible for children! Graphic and unrealistic attacking reptiles, biting faces and in one killing a man. I don't mind a healthy respect for poisonous snakes, but this is so absurd it's laughable. Every page is the stuff of nightmares for young ones.

a great book about poisonous snakes and reptiles

I bought this book for my six year old grandson. We have a book by the same author/editor about sea creatures that we liked so well that we bought this book and her book about bugs too.

The information given is factual and includes size of the animal compared to the size of a human, it's native habitat, it's prey and life span and the potential danger to humans. There is a section that usually shows a drawing of the snake striking a human and tells a little story about what the drawing is depicting. The illustrations are very colorful and show the snake in a striling pose with fangs bared. I found myself very glad that I live where I do as there are very few varities of poisonous snakes and reptiles here. At the same time I felt sorry for those living in some areas of Australia and Africa where they seem to have an unfair amount of the creatures to watch out for.

This book would appeal to most little boys of six to ten years old and one of my grand daughters of the same age poured over it too, although her sister did not like it. The book would be very helpful for anyone doing a school report on snakes and reptiles but to anyone who has a dislike or fear of snakes and reptiles... this book will give you the creeps.

Wonderful Book!

If you are looking for a book with lots of information, wonderful art work, and something that will keep the interest- this is the book. I bought this book because I work with preschoolers ages 4-5. One day we were discussing snakes and they wanted to see some pictures. I went to Barnes & Noble looking for a book with lots of colorful pictures with narration I could easily translate into their level of understanding. Not only was I able to do this with Snakes and Reptiles, but we have read the book so many times the children can now identify most of the snakes by themselves and tell the stories in their own words! They have gone home and told their parents and parents have favorably commented on their excitement. As an adult I have learned a lot and I am sure all 16 of the children in my class have.

Great Book!

My 6 year old loves this book. We have TONS of reptile books and this one is a favorite. Great pictures.

jXmas gift for an 8-year-old

This was a gift for my 8-year-old granddaughter. She picked it out at our local B&N and didn't take her nose out of it during the 45-minute drive back to my house. She then went through it with her grandfather. Since then, her mother has informed me that Emily wants a coral snake for her 10th birthday.
