    Chapter 10

Softpaw perked up, her sightless eyes shining. "Really?" She asked. Jayfeather tossed Ivypool a questioning glance. "Yes. We can leave now if you like," Ivypool replied. "Yay!" Softpaw jumped from her nest and ran outside. Softpaw followed Ivypool through the thorn tunnel and out into the forest. "Okay," started Ivypool. "Follow me." Softpaw followed her mentor around trees and bushes by keeping her whiskers next to Ivypool's pelt. Then her paw caught on a thick root, and she tripped, landing in the dirt. "Are you okay?" Ivypool asked, sniffing Softpaw. "Fine," she growled, pulling herself from the dust cloud. "Okay, then. Should we keep going?" Ivypool asked. "Yes!" Softpaw replied eagerly. She continued to follow Ivypool, careful not to trip again. "This is where we will hunt," Ivypool whispered. "Can you smell the prey?" Softpaw nodded. The birds and mice had musky, woodsy scents. "I'm going to get into a hunters' crouch. Copy my movement by running your tail over me," she instructed, her voice low. Softpaw lightly ran her tail over her mentor's body, feeling the way her muscles moved and replicating the stance. "Good. When hunting, be sure to make no noise," Ivypool instructed. Softpaw nodded. "Try stalking that mouse," she advised. Softpaw sniffed the air. The mouse was only a few tail lengths away. She slowly crept foreward, her body low to the ground. But then, her tail thwacked a low hanging branch. The mouse smell was getting further and further away! Growling, Softpaw leaped after it, claws outstretched. It was running for a hole in a tree. Softpaw was gaining on it. She leaped, and then landed on top of the mouse. It squeaked once before going limp under her paws. "Softpaw!" Ivypool called. "Ivypool! I caught the mouse!" She replied, carrying the mouse back to her in her jaws. "Good job, it was a sloppy kill, but you did it!" Ivypool nodded approval. Softpaw proudly carried her kill back to camp, holding it like a trophy. "Did you catch that, Softpaw?" Lilykit asked, as they emerged from the tunnel. "Yes. I caught it on my first try," Softpaw boasted. Lilypaw's eyes widened. "Wow Softpaw, we were wrong. Maybe you can be a warrior!" Seedpaw added, running over. Softpaw raised her tail haughtily. Daisy padded over. "Perhaps you'd like to offer that to Cinderheart?" She suggested. Ivypool nodded. "Go ahead," she turned her apprentice in the direction of the nursery. Softpaw entered the warm, quiet den. "Is that mouse I smell?" Purred a kind voice. "Yep!" Softpaw replied, heading in the direction of Cinderheart's voice. She dropped the mouse near the queen's paws. "Thank you, Softpaw," she mewed. "It was my first catch!" Boasted Softpaw. "That is great!" Cinderheart purred, taking a bite. "Thanks!" Softpaw smiled and exited the den.

    AN OK BOOK

i read this book and enjoyed it to a certain degree, but I felt that the characterization let somethng to be desired. I didn't get close to them as I most often do in other books. . .the plot was fine, but still not one that was well rounded...

A disappointing read from a master of romance

I have enjoyed Krentz's other romantic suspense novels, but this one felt flat. We didn't really get to know the characters well enough to care about them. There were some good moments, but on the whole, I'm glad I got it from the library.

    MAKE ROOM IN YOUR LIBRARY

Make sure you have room in your library for this one. I have read every book Jayne Ann Krentz has written under all of her alias and this is her best contemporary fiction in the last 3 years.
