The Second Sun
This is the second collection in George Mann's series, released within months of the first, and, I must say, to some extent, it shows. Rather like releasing a Christmas album of odds and ends after a classic opus earlier in the year. Volume 1 was a veritable companion to the Dozois and Hartwell and Kramer collections I adore each year. It's not that anything in here is abysmal. I just thought the stories in Vol.1 were stronger, with some particularly memorable and worth revisiting, whereas nothing in here really stood out. I liked the idea of revisiting the same characters in the same anthology, the two stories about Mason and his rats by Neal Asher. And Paul DiFilippo's iCity made an uncomfortable nod to where we might actually be heading. But the rest of it I could very much take or leave. And Dan Abnett's Point Of Contact was a despondent, dismal way to finish, though probably the way it actually would (will?) be when/if First Contact does happen. Was this review helpful?
