This novel, like so many other Christian Fiction Novels, belongs on the Best Sellers List...

...not hidden in a corner in the back of the Bookstore.
Sons of Thunder is the story of Marcos, Dino and Sophia, hardly more than children, forced to leave their island homeland and survive in a world they know little about and hardly understand. The story takes them from their late teens to their mid 30's; from Greece to America and home again. The characters are not perfect, doing what they need to do in order to survive 1930 Chicago and WWII, but the story has a wonderful message about accepting yourself and your faults. It is a excellent story that holds your interest from the first page to the last and would definitely make a great movie.

Turn this one into a movie!

Sons of Thunder by Susan May Warren is an epic story which spans a couple of decades, and takes place on several continents. Though I don't usually care for World War II novels, the setting of this one swept me away. Warren took us from the Greek Isles to prohibition era Chicago, and back again, with enough description to make me feel like I've lived in both places.

She filled the book with rich detail, multi-layered characters, and plot twists I never saw coming. I loved how she weaved the story around historical events and actual people.

Fair warning, this is no light and fluffy read (a fact that suits this edgy christian fiction lover just fine). Warren has mastered the art of brainstorming the worst possible thing that could happen to her characters-then writing it in. These are flawed people who've drawn the short straw in life and nothing's off the table when it comes to self preservation. But resourcefulness will only get them so far. At some point each must decide if "God will deliver us" is just a platitude or a promise he can believe in.

Sons of Thunder easily places in my top ten of 2010. It's the kind of novel that would make an excellent movie. I wonder if anyone's bought the film rights yet. Hollywood, are you listening?

    Not Author's Best

Of the books I've read by this author, this was one I did not like. I thought it lacked the depth of Christian writing usually found in this type of fiction. It probably should only be listed in Fiction, not Christian fiction. Other books by the author are much better.

An Amazingly Written Suspenseful Love Story

I love a good historical Christian fiction book, and this proved to be one of the best ones so far. I loved everything about this book, from the style of writing to the characters to the theme. I was immediately pulled in from the first page, and wasn't let go until the very last. It was extremely hard to put this book down at times because I was so pulled into the story and the characters that I didn't want to lose the feeling of being in that time and place with those amazing people.

This story takes place in both Greece and America, during the era of Al Capone and flapper girls. Amazingly written, this story of Markos, Dino and Sophia was both romantic and tragic, as well as suspenseful. It is a book that has something in it for everyone. My heart went out to all the characters, but Dino really tugged it the most, with his quietness. The message of redemption and sacrifice and friendship is truly amazing. I need tissues through alot of this book, but it's definitely worth it!

This is definitely a start to a wonderful collection of books by a truly amazing author. I give this book a hands down 5 star rating and highest recommendations.

    A Page Turner

Although held in high regard my many Sophia Frangos described herself as poison and warned her friends from letting themselves get too close to her. I was very captivated by her story and had to read to the end to see how everything worked out for this courageous woman. I want to read more books by this author.

    I Also Recommend:

    Excellent historical romantic suspense!

Incredibly romantic, tragically beautiful, heart-wrenching, and deeply moving, Sons of Thunder swept me away. This first novel in Susan's new series pulls you into each of the characters' lives in a powerful way. The passion, the heartache, the longing for love and acceptance. It's all in this story as well as the struggle to survive, the yearning for identity, the desire for someone Who will love you and always be there for you. This passionate tale of love and betrayal brilliantly portrays how an abiding faith in God is passed on by example and illustrated through an unwavering spiritual connection to the One Who is faithful and true. It also shows how God knows are greatest need and often allows us to go through the fire to bring us to where He wants us to be. Our trials cause us to grow up and live for others and not just ourselves.

There were so many incredible lessons to be gleaned within the pages of this powerful story that I could go on and on. The bottom line is that this was, in my opinion, Susan May Warren's best novel yet because she captivated me and made me care about every character in this story in a way that rarely happens when I'm reading. I've heard it said that the best stories are ones where the author imagines the worst thing that could happen to their character in every scene, then makes that very thing happen. Susan does a perfect job at building tension and providing a realistic plot that moved me to tears several times. And talk about edgy. Wow! But so tastefully done. These characters were so real to me and I learned a lot from them. Can you tell I loved this book? Sons of Thunder is making my top fiction list for 2010.

    A compelling redemptive story

Susan May Warren hit a home run with this book! Sons of Thunder stole my sleep last night since I could not put the book down! It's a wonderful story with redemption woven through the entire book, completely laced with Scripture. Markos, Sofie, and Dino captured my heart in such a compelling way that I felt like I learned the lesssons with them. I loved the way Mrs. Warren captured the heart of God--I felt myself reaching for a pen to take notes.

For writers: If you want to study how to write compelling character arcs, develop plots twists or create a story world, study this book!
