    Decent & entertaining

This ST:TOS novel takes place during the 4th year of the original mission. The Enterprise is investigating a system beyond the edge of Federation space. A colony has been destroyed and the crew tries to solve the mystery about the colony's demise and who was behind it.

Like many TOS novels, a main character is given a major role, and this time it is Sulu. He has a romance with a Vietnamese archeologist named Trangh. She is heavily involved in the first half of the plot and whose fate puts Sulu on the course he chooses that gives the book its title.

The book does introduce a race in this novel which many ST fans will know from other shows in the series. The mystery of who was trying to wipe them out is never fully explained; more likely used as a jumping off point for a future book or as a tie in to another part of the ST saga.

Given my strong fandom for TOS, it was odd to see Sulu - normally fairly stoic and composed - acting maudlin and lovesick. This was also coupled with a brooding and pensive Kirk - though the movies did a great job probing his mindset.
