A nice addition...
Although I will agree that the author's style was confusing at times, I felt that this was a good novel. The situations involving Han, Chewie and Leia introduced some interesting facets to the Star Wars story, such as the Empire's use of torture techniques involving mind-bending drugs, the existence of Jedi that operated apart from the Council on Coruscant (obvious by the fact that they had kids and spouses and by the fact that Callista seemed unfamiliar with figures like Yoda and Obi-Wan) and another 'Emperor's Hand' with an evil prodigy. Irek was a frustrating character in his attitude but was fascinating for his ability to control machines via a brain implant. It was nice to see Leia put such a damper on the evil plans that had formed too. Luke's situation was fascinating as well in that he was pushed to use the more intellectual aspects of the Force rather than just slashing-and-bounding repeatedly. It was intriguing to see that even a Jedi Master can get hurt (physically and emotionally).

Disappointment
This is a story that introduces Callista to the Star Wars Universe. This story is inconsistant with some of the ideas that were important to the prequel trilogy. I had a problem with Leia's harder edge in her character. It just did not seem like her. Luke's side of the story just seemed a little hokey and the ending was not the exciting end I expected from any Star Wars story. I think that Barabara Hambly is a better Star Wars short story writer than a Star Wars novelist.

Boring
Star Wars as a series has delivered some unbelievable books, and is very enjoyable to read, but this book was terrible. It was difficult to follow and the plot lines were boring and tedious. This is the only time with a Star Wars book that I struggled to get through the novel.

Another exciting story within the Star Wars universe.
Extends deeper into the series so more is learned about the lead characters.

Luke+Callista=Great story
There's a lot of naysayers about this novel, but for those who know what it's like to meet the one who'll change your life, you understand what Luke is experiencing when he and Callista grow together in this novel.

I can't believe this!
I can't believe this! Of all Star Wars books I've read (and I've read 25 of them, I should know) this is the best, greatest or whatever positive word you know (and that apparently isn't a very long list because you didn't find a proper word for this book). It's all that. It's a perfect story about perfect people and the part where Luke's in is even better. Who could not feel sympathy for Luke when he thinks Callista's going to die (well, she had died already so vanish is better word for that)? I tell you, I haven't read a better book in my entire life.

Was I the only one who liked this book?
Almost every review said that this book was bad. Why? It wasn't as confusing as everyone made it seem, and a lot of parts were funny. The plot wasn't that ridiculous and I could see Luke falling in love with Callista. Even though some descriptions were weird and Luke's injured leg started to get annoying I recomend this book to any SW fan.

I dread the next Hambly
Did not like the book from page 1. Had to start reading that page three times just to understand what it was trying to say. Darksaber made it a lot better. Need to read other Hambly books to keep up with the story, but I am not looking forward to it.

Children of the Jedi fails as the next generation.
This is definitely not one of your better Star Wars novels. It is slow, tedious and confusing. Hambly is not one of the better Star Wars authors but the book is not completely without hope. I was able to read the whole thing without forcing myself to continue reading. There are several strange, almost ridiculous events that occur and the story has an almost fairy tale like feeling to it. If you are not reading the Star Wars novels in chronological order, this should definitely be one of the last ones you read but it should be read despite the many shortcomings.

Star Wars: Children of the Jedi
This was aweful to say the least..the Force is poorly fitted, and a 14-15 year old kid using the Force seems more powerful than the Emporer and Leia and Luke seem more weak in the Force than a rock. Poor, vague plot, doesn't involve much but junk, aweful waste of time to read. Callista isn't very good, and Luke liking a 60-year old dead person is odd to say the least...Mara and Luke are a much better pair..Luke told Callista 'I don't like you for you have the Force, but for you.' Luke liked Mara for the Force, for her, and for anything else!

Don't try it
I hate to pan anything bearing the Star Wars name, but this book earns it. Not that I did not give it a chance -- Luke being busted up the whole time just got tedious and the plot was VERY hard to follow. Also, the whole Callista mess is ridiculous. Zahn has thankfully delivered us from this potential disaster by getting Luke and Mara together.

Star Wars: Children of the Jedi
Took a while to finish, doesn't keep me interested, hard to follow because it's so boring...only worth reading for the conclusion of Darksaber.

What book are you talking about?
I thought it was a great book! Yes, Leia was a little too dependant on everyone, but it showed some humanness in her that we've not seen before. Luke seemed human when he had feelings for Gaeriel. I thought Nichos and Cray were just thrown in there, but you had to have Cray for the end to work out. What I dont' get is why she wouldn't believe that the real Nichos was gone, and she just had a droid. I thought Luke and Callista were a good match. This book was a good mix of romance and action adn strategy. Yes, you had to think about it, but that's part of what makes a good book good. I've read better novels on both sides of shoot em up and romance, but this is one of the best mixes. Thinking about the book made me go back and read it again, and you really have to do that to pick up all the details that make it a well written book. All in all, a good story line and realistic characters if you take the time to notice details, think about everything, and savor the book over adn over again.

I must say I am really not a fan of Barbra Hambly writing style

I must say I am really not a fan of Barbra Hambly writing style. The plot of the story was ok but it was the delivering of it I had a real problem with. I struggled reading it, having to re-read paragraphs again because it was choppy and the direction of thought was everywhere. The words just didn’t flow…. Luke’s injury throughout the ENTIRE story was tedious and boring….and Luke and Callista relationship was like reading a third grade romance novel: from their dialogue, the silly “dream” on Tatoonie and even the so-call “I love you for you, not the force” (yet I heard he spends the next two novels trying to get the Force back to her..?!). It left me with an impression of Luke as pathetic love sick puppy, not a Jedi Master. Mara Jade was briefly in the story, yet after all Luke and her went through in the Thrawn series, they acted like cold strangers to one another. Leia seemed way out of character and with all the flashbacks and over-analyzing questions left me with…who cares?! As for the other two remaining novels in this series….I think I’ll pass…. -

Least Favorite
I have read over 100 Star Wars books and this is by far my least favorite. The writing is redundant and unexciting. Very dissapointing. Read a brief summary of the story instead, just to get the gist of it.

worst star wars book ive read
This book was a slow read. I actually stopped reading it and finally picked it up a year later and finished it. Allthough i do have to say the last few chapters made it worth it. The end was great , but the rest poor plot development and slow moving.

Not worth reading
Of all the Star Wars novels I'd read, this ranks as the worst. A slow read and an uninteresting plot
