I'm a patient man. So patient I've held a torch for another "Shadows of the Empire" tale for years. Previous comic efforts proving to be lackluster at best.

I've tried hard to approach Shadow Games with a positive slant. Going back in my mind, I can recall that the Darth Maul novel Shadow Hunter was OK, not great. I can also recall that the author's Medstar dualogy was about a book too long, but it was average at best. Not bad. average. This did nothing to slow down my energy to read Death Star when it came out as well, which I felt was below acceptable and bordering on just plain bad. It seemed Reaves' purpose with Death Star was to craft a story while filing in the blanks of the expanded U, leading up to an during EP IV.

It was this book that drove me away from SW books for a couple of years until I was lulled back with Matt Stover's Luke Skywalker and the Shadows of Mindor. Re-energized, I followed it immediately with James Luceno's Millenium Falcon. That rolled into the Fate of the Jedi, and I was back on course with SW books. So when Shadow Games was announced I was excited to say the least. I'm skipping hard details to remain spoiler free.

I made it a reading priority, but found myself struggling through the first half as I found myself questioning the point of the book, 3/4 of the way I felt a little better, but by the end, I felt I had just wasted my time. It was flat, the main character, Dash Rendar was no more appealing than he was in SOTE. I was kind of miffed as I knew I should have bailed when I saw the book was really going nowhere. All I could recall was echoes of Kevin J Anderson from the Banatm era. When he was on the scene, it seemed like such a fresh voice, but in retrospect, it's really nothing but page filler.

I did read the first book in the Coruscant Nights series, which was a s you could guess from my above statements... average, and in light of Shadow Games, I'm going to pass on the subsequent books. I'll probably steer clear of Reave's work from now on. Don't get me wrong. I mean no disrespect, I don't want to come off as an irate fanboy, but his work it seems is just not my cup of tea.

God I miss Karen Traviss.
