Forget the book -- Enjoy the music instead
On the whole, this book has interesting tidbits but many times it gets tedius. The bio of each song begins seems to sound the same. While it is interesting to find out the history and meaning behind some of the songs (for the first time I understand "Mack the Knife") the minutia can make your eyes glaze over. And if you are not a musician you will definitely get lost when the author dissects the chords, sharps and flats. Also, he picks obsure renditions of the songs and brings them high praise. If those renditions were so good then why don't we recognize them? It's as though the author is telling us if you aren't aware of these renditions then you just aren't sophisticated enough for the music.
