A Journey to Another World
The Unguarded Moment includes portraits and landscapes from India, South Africa, France, Yemen, Afghanistan, Cambodia, Tibet, and other countries. It is a beautiful companion piece to the earlier Looking East: Portraits by Steve McCurry.
Unlike Looking East, where all the photographs were in portrait (vertical) mode, all of The Unguarded Moment's photographs are in landscape (horizontal) mode. This may seem inconsequential, until you start leafing through the book and find you don't have to keep changing its orientation on your lap or table. The quality of the reproductions lives up to Phaidon's reputation.
If you love outstanding photography, you will not be disappointed by these images. They are mysterious and evocative, funny and heart-breaking. Mostly, though, they are beautiful.
The photographs stand on their own, and each is identified by the subject - what it is you're looking at - and the date and place it was taken. Would my enjoyment have been enhanced by more editorial content? Yes; and that's the reason I marked down slightly in the "informative" and "comprehensive" categories. People who love Steve McCurry's photographs want to know more about them.
But he is silent.
