Difficult Journey, Beautiful Read
When the author married her Ivy League classmate, she failed to realize that she was also marrying a full-blooded Salvadoran, with history, culture, and pain of which she knew very little. Her memoir tells of her journey to love these other parts of her husband and his country. She deals with everything from the heartbreaking and turbulent history of El Salvador to the intimate realities of their family life. Trying to understand where another person is coming from is difficult and awkward (and she shows that throughout the book), but her writing is easy to read and almost poetic -- I couldn't put it down. She took a difficult journey and made it accessible to the reader. Anyone who has spent time abroad, or works with or loves someone who grew and lived and loved in another place should read this book. Was this review helpful? Yes NoThank you for your feedback.
