An Accessible and Meditative Volume
Denise Levertov writes religious poetry through her spiritual doubts and struggles and invites us to wrestle with her. Her poetry is refreshingly accessible, her lines simple, but deep and artistically arranged. In several of this collection's poems, she reexamines Bible stories commonly told through flannel-board and sock puppets, drawing new understanding and life from them. My favorite is the triumphant humility found in "Poetics of Faith," in which Peter's overenthusiastic faith is rewarded, even though he did not successfully walk on water. This volume is very thin, which makes it fit perfectly into a coat pocket for a walk or rest unobtrusively on a bedside table. Trust me; you'll need it by you when one of her lines haunts you long after you've closed the book. Was this review helpful? Yes NoThank you for your feedback.
