Quite enjoyable, but a step down from the first one.
The first time my friend and I listened to the first Captain Beyond album in the summer of 1972, it just about took our faces off! For their next album, ¿Sufficiently Breathless¿ (1973), Bobby Caldwell was no longer with them. Marty Rodriguez replaced Caldwell on drums. Another percussionist and keyboards were also added. This is a much more mellow Captain Beyond. The shifting time signatures, the breathtaking execution and the mind-blowing energy of the first recording gave way to a more straightforward approach. This is still a very good album from an exceptional band. The music has a delectably cosmic groove that I find irresistible. I recommend this album highly. But remember folks: the first album is a MONSTER. Bobby Caldwell¿s drumming alone will stupefy you. You won¿t believe the energy the band produces. The arrangements are well thought out. The band has unbelievable finesse. They¿re classy. They¿re thrilling. They¿ll blow your mind! If you want an enjoyable album, get ¿Sufficiently Breathless.¿ If you want your face taken off, get the first album (simply entitled ¿Captain Beyond.¿) Cheers, Murray
