This book has, and always will be, one of my all-time favorites! For any woman who has expirienced the ups and downs of growing up female and just trying to find your place in this world. I adored both Vix and Caitlin and found myself struggling to choose which one I identified with. Am I the smart and serious Vix or the spontaneous care-free Caitlin? I finally realized that parts of both of them are inside of me as most of us have found from time to time. From their first sexual encounters to picking husbands, Vix and Caitlin take you along with them as they venture through life. This book is not supposed to have a plot or a real climax. It is realistic story about friendship, love, and growing up. A must-read for anyone who has been blessed to know the true ups and downs of friendship....and in the end, the importance of sisterhood.

    All about dysfunction

A caution to readers: I picked this book up looking for a lighthearted summer read. That's not what this book is. It's a book about dysfunction - sex, affairs, lies between friends, and lots of hurt feelings, none of which gets resolved. (You get a hint of this from the book cover - guess I should have read it more closely). The women are either selfish and destructive or weak and feeling sorry for themselves. I couldn't relate to that and hope my friends and daughters can't either.

Entertaining to a Degree, but a Little Disappointing

I used to enjoy the Fudge books by Judy Blume, so when I discovered books by her for adults, I was excited. After reading the covers to 4 books, I bought this one. Blume's Summer Sisters has well-developed characters, bad attitudes, disturbing topics and events, and lots of details (maybe too many details). I found the book entertaining during my boring summer. I felt like I was in another time and place, which is always fun when you read. And I liked how Blume included what each character was thinking. However, the content was a little disturbing. I felt like I shouldn't tell anyone I was reading it. I was disappointed that Blume would have the only positive influence, Abby presented as almost just the opposite by the other characters. While I found both Vix and Caitlin's attitudes and behavior disturbing, I was relieved that the story was told from Vix's point of view. If I had been Vix, (I hope that) I would have realized Caitlin was not such a great influence and found another 'summer sister.' I would not recommend this book to a young reader, particularly ages 11 to 15. As far as entertainment purposes, I really enjoyed the book. It kept me going back to find out what happened next. But as far as the topics and some of the language used by such young characters, I would not want to read this again. In fact, I am giving it to a friend who wants to read it and letting her keep it.
