A Truly Good Read
I just finished this book and could hardly put it down. The mystery of who the elusive Joji really is and what happened back in 1945 is as riveting as the investigation of the present day assault and murder of the mistress. The historical setting of Hiroshima at the end of the war and the graphic descriptions of the aftermath of the bomb are true to other accounts I have read, as gripping as they are disturbing. There are so many facets to this story, the problems of Japanese war survivors, who emigrated to this country after the war, in general as well as the intense, personal story of Mas, a man who grieves in silence for his dead wife, his estranged daughter, and all those who disappeared in the mushroom cloud. Above all, the author has done a superb job of maintaining the suspence at a high level throughout. I will be watching for more books by Ms. Hirahara.
