"Master and Commander" et al (Aubrey/Maturin series)
I have completely fallen in love with this series of historical naval novels, in love with the characters, in love with the language, and in love with the adventures. There are 20, T-W-E-N-T-Y of them; I'm reading number 16, and when I finish the series, I'm going to go right back to book number 1, to read them again, but next time through, I'll write down the words I don't know, and look them up. When you were little, did you ever have a book series that totally involved you; you couldn't wait to get the next one, and you were heartbroken when you finished the last? This is that experience again, in spades. Patrick O'Brian brings a whole world, quite literally, to life, and his main characters and their lives, interesting to begin with, develop in fascinating ways. Dramatic, funny, touching, grotesque, horrifying, informative, altogether fabulous and can't-put-them-down reads!

I love this series!
Maybe the best of the series so far. Kept my attention of course but it makes me keep a dictionary handy and kept me wondering if the 'mate' is Maturin's assistant, or Jack Aubrey or Diana Villiers. Loved it.
