Well written - and interesting journey
The author follows the history of Florida, which is very much the history of the Everglades. All that wasted land - and in such a great climate - was a magnet for generations who dreamed of what could be if only that swamp was drained. They never did succeed of course, but along the way the south Florida ecosystem was deeply affected. In some ways permanently, as when the rapids of the Miami River were dynamited, but in other ways not so permanently. If you are familair with Miami you know the names Flagler, Krome, Broward, Perrine....all were players in the making of the state what it is today.

This is a wonderful book. Very comprehensive and covers the history of Florida, the politics surrounding the Everglades and the history of the Everglades itself. I thought the book would be dry, but it was so well written with so many interesting anecdotes, that I found it very easy to read. Every Floridian, every person who loves Florida, and anyone who cares about the environment should read this book.
