I thought it was kinda lame.

I did not enjoy Ms.Donnelly's style of writing. Whoever compared her to Diana Gabaldon was way off. It seemed like a story that my mother would like...(she's 86) That being said, I didn't totally hate it. It was a nice, somewhat predictable story.

    Not really my 'cuppa'

Though I read the entire novel (700+ pages) I have to admit, I realize I am not a fan of the historic epic. I found it was just a little too 'over the top' what with one bad thing after the other occurring. Basically, I think it was very much like a long soap opera. A bit boring in parts, some racy sex, violence, plot twists, very good people and very bad villains. Won't be reading the second book.
The best part was the interview with the author, Jennifer Donnelly, at the end of the book.

    more from this reviewer

    Slow start

Book starts slow and is a bit predictable but a guilty pleasure none the less

    Good but redundant

I loved the story but found it to be redundant at the end...I disliked that the author had to repeat the story line over and over...

    A worthy read

As some others mentioned, there were a few things I wish hadn't been in the book - to many "near misses", some "fairy tale" type things happening - I'm trying to be vague so as not to spoil the book.

But there were many things I did like. I like a big book that I don't feel that I've wasted my time on. I like the Jack the Ripper connections (I don't even mind the major historical inaccuracy someone else pointed out. An author can take a few liberties - that's why its fiction and not non-fiction, as long as it's mostly true). I loved the stuff about tea. I like a good love story that's not mushy - this was 3, sort of... I like that at some parts I wanted to yell at Fiona and beat up Joe - it means I was engaged with the characters. I like that I'm compelled to recommend this book to at least 3 people and am considering buying it for a birthday present for a friend.

I know I'm a tough grader, I took 2 stars away for things mentioned in my first paragraph. I now have to find the sequel, because I still liked the book and want to see what happens next.
