Thank YOU, Duke Ellington Legacy Band!
This CD is great for so many reasons it's difficult to know where to begin. Maybe the first place to start is with singer Nancy Reed. Her performances are all terrific, but her vocals on 'Cottontail' propel her the ranks of today's leading jazz divas, and we're talking Cassandra Wilson, Dianne Reeves, and Carla Cook here. Backed by the superb horn solos of superstar Wycliffe Gordon and bandleader Virginia Mayhew, she gives full reign to Jon Hendricks' saucy lyrics and Norman Simmons' fantastic arrangement. The balance of the CD is commensurate there's not a clunker here, and even the most sophisticated listeners will be at pains to distinguish between the Duke Ellington Legacy outfit and any of the best jazz big bands out there. Was this review helpful?
