I recently read the novel That Night, by Alice McDermott. I found it that it was very thought provoking and took a thoughtful look at suburban life, and the times and ideals of the late 60¿s. The story was told by a young girl who witnessed, along with the rest of the neighborhood, a small drama play out on the lawn of Sheryl¿s house. One evening a boy, Rick, along with all of his friends rode around the neighborhood in their cars waiting for nightfall. Finally, Rick went up to the door of one of the houses to find out where his girlfriend Sheryl had gone. What happened next no one could really explain. The men of the neighborhood felt that Sheryl¿s mother was being threatened so they rushed to her aid. A fight broke out between the men and the boys, and it was forever referred to as ¿that night.¿ The rest of the story was flashbacks of this event, and the events that lead up to it. Reflections of the evening years later, and the different neighbors point of view, including Sheryl¿s, where we found out the rest of the story. I gave this book 4 out of 5 stars. I felt that it deserved this grade because it was a very interesting book and I enjoyed reading it. I liked the way that it portrayed the characters, and how it brought out many human truths people often do not recognize. I found the subject matter to be interesting as well. However, many parts of the story were very confusing, jumping around in narrators and settings. As a reader you really had to pay attention to what was going on in the story to get the complete meaning out of it, which is why I only gave it 4 of the 5 stars. If you are looking to read a book different from those that you are probably used to, you should definitely pick up That Night.

Oh Wow!! It IS a movie!
Likely to be disappointed as the book is so wonderful, but will watch with fingers crossed and hope this is one of the rare times when a Hollywood production captures the true feel of an amazing and heartfelt book.
