After the sudden death of her husband, Caroline Fowler, a young, beautiful mother to a troubled, teenage boy is looking to move away from her painful life in Ohio and start fresh in the historic Virginia hunt country where the landscape is dotted with horse farms and fox hunts are still a weekend activity. While she plans to find a home, get her son established in his new school and start a catering business, her friends have plans of their own for her. They eagerly introduce her to local doctor, Carter, who does his level best to sweep Caroline off her feet. Still feeling the bitter sting of guilt, grief and disappointment from her marriage, Caroline enjoys the adult companionship and is determined to keep the relationship casual. Ruggedly handsome local vet, Hank Gasden, is the equine surgeon that horse owners trust, but has the reputation for being a ladies man. Through a series of chance encounters with Caroline, he decides that he needs her in his life. His challenge is to break through the walls Caroline has built up around her heart and convince her that she needs him as much as he needs her.Was this review helpful? In The Arrangement, author Susan H. Spencer has woven a wonderful story that has a little mystery mixed with romance and drama. The story moves at a perfect pace. The descriptions of the setting and characters' emotions are detailed and realistic without being too flowery or hindering the story's progression. While the story is primarily about Caroline and Hank, Ms. Spencer also incorporates other subplots that do not take away, but only add to the larger picture. The only time I found myself questioning the plot line was during the multiple mentions of widows and widowers. I understand that the author wanted to create a male character that could completely relate to Caroline, but I wondered if that many young people who knew each other would really have their relationships end due to death as opposed to divorce.
Overall, I truly enjoyed this book and I neglected a few things I needed to get done because I could not put it down. I found the characters to be likeable and realistic and wanted to know what happened to them. While this book is long, it is a quick read that I would recommend to anyone who enjoys a good love story. I really hope Ms. Spencer has more books on the way!
